“Come anytime you need my help, ne?”
And so, by those warm words, there he was, drenching wet from the midnight rain, clenching his fist and banging on the door desperately, then weakly, to finally sliding his palm down the door while looking down, tears mixing with the rainwater flowing from his wet hair.
The owner of the house dashed to the door, wondering who was knocking his door so wildly, but went so silent seconds after. He peeked through the curtain and his eyes widened as he saw that familiar purple shirt on a wet figure slouching in front of his house.
He quickly opened the door, and soon the miserable-looking man looked up at him, totally wet from head to toe, and more than that, his eyes were red and swollen.
“Jun-chan!!! What’s wrong!? Come in!!!” He grabbed the man’s arm and dragged him slowly into his house, and closed the door.
“Aiba-kun…”
“Wait… Just… You’re wet. Wait here, okay?”
Jun nodded and forced a weak smile as Aiba ran inside to bring him a towel and clean clothes.
“Let me borrow your shower…” Jun said weakly.
Aiba nodded. “I’ll be waiting in the living room, okay?”
“Mm,” Jun mumbled weakly as he dragged his feet to the bathroom. Aiba sighed as he went to the kitchen to make a cup of hot chocolate for him.
---
Aiba was cleaning his old camera lens when Jun came and plopped down on the couch beside him, still rubbing the towel against his wet hair. Aiba smiled softly at him, secretly inhaling the fresh scent from Jun’s body.
“Feel better?” he asked and smiled as he put his lens down.
“Yes!” Jun smiled. “Thank you! Hey, you’re still doing photography?” Jun pointed at the photography equipments on the low table. “Not bored yet?”
Aiba’s smile disappeared and he sighed before smiling again, “Jun-chan,” he started softly, “We just met three days ago at the park, and I was taking some photos at that time, obviously I’m not bored yet,” he reached out his hands and held both of Jun’s shoulders, turning Jun’s body slightly to face him but Jun quickly looked away. Aiba gave an understanding smile, “One, Jun-chan tends to act cheerful when he’s sad. Two, Jun-chan looks away when he’s hiding someth—…”
“No, I—”
“Three, Jun-chan cuts others’ words so that his lies won’t be found out!” Aiba grinned. “Hey, Jun-chan, we’ve been friends for years. And I was the one opening the door for you. You were crying, even a stupid person like me know that. Tell me. We promised, right?”
“…it’s your choice so I won’t stop you… but if… IF things get tough… let me be your best friend then. You can tell me everything.”
“It’s a deal. Thanks, Aiba-kun.”
Jun smiled at the little memory. Looking up at Aiba’s eyes, he was drawn into the familiar kindness and warmth. Aiba had the eyes which told honesty and the deepest care for anyone. Those eyes weakened Jun’s aching heart even more, and soon his lips started to tremble, a sad whimper came out from his mouth. He bit his lower lip hard it would surely bleed.
“Jun-chan, Jun-chan! No! Please stop!” Aiba cupped Jun’s cheek and stroke his face softly with his thumb, “Don’t bite your lip like that!”
“But I… But I…”
Aiba pulled Jun in a tight hug, putting Jun’s head to rest on his shoulder. “Here. Cry here. I won’t see.”
Jun’s shoulder trembled uncontrollably as he cried secretly on Aiba’s shoulder. Aiba closed his eyes, caressing the younger man’s hair softly, “Yes, yes, Jun-chan, that’s good… It’s okay… Don’t say anything just yet, okay? Just cry…” he sniffed too as he felt his shoulder got wetter because of Jun’s tears and half-dried hair.
“Sho… san…” Jun sniffled as he raised his head from Aiba’s shoulder and body from Aiba’s embrace, eyes still looking down. “I’ll never be good enough for him… never…” Jun wiped his tears.
“So… it’s about Sho-chan…?”
Jun nodded. “Why… can’t I leave him…? Why can’t I… hate him…? After all he had done to me… why…” he buried his face in his palms, trying his best to not cry again.
“What did… he do…?”
Jun sighed, his heart aching from the memories…
---
“Sho-san, I… I think… I love you,” Jun smiled shyly as he confessed to Sho, who just laughed as if it was the funniest thing in the world.
“You’re disgusting.”
Just that, and Sho left. Never did he know that Jun was crying that time, nor did he know that the younger would still love him no matter what he said.
Jun realized that, time wouldn’t always change people’s hearts. His love towards Sho didn’t change—it even got deeper as the years went by and he entered the same university as Sho—, despite his side job as a model which obviously let him met with hundreds of wonderful women…
Sho was a campus idol, and his charisma and intelligence had made him chosen as the “face of the campus” so he often appeared in campus magazine or promotional medias as a model.
Jun met Sho in a photo studio he had a photoshoot at. As he slid his shirt back while walking to the restroom, he saw Sho came out from other studio beside him, all neat and handsome in his grey suit, pumping Jun’s blood to his cheeks as he saw him.
“Sho-san!” Jun unconsciously ran to him anyway, standing close to him.
“Oh, Matsumoto-kun,” Sho’s eyes alternated from Jun to the studio Jun came out from. “Eeh, so you’re the one working for that?” he pointed at the sign with the magazine’s name in front of Jun’s studio. Sho saw some pretty girls walked outside the studio while bowing in a cute way at them, “How nice,” he added and smiled as he entered the restroom, followed by Jun.
Jun didn’t dare to look up at Sho. Sho was just too dazzling Jun was afraid he couldn’t control himself when he did so. Jun finished quickly and walked to the sink to wash his hands, but Sho caught up with him.
“What magazine was it?”
“Uh… Well, young adult for this one. Need to do some difficult poses,” Jun answered casually. “Sho-san… Want to have coffee with me after this…?” Jun mentally strangled himself after inviting Sho out like it was nothing.
Sho chuckled, “You haven’t changed at all, huh,” Sho glanced at Jun through the mirror, “Daring,” Sho grinned.
Jun looked up unconsciously. Before he knew it, he had already shoved and pinned Sho against the nearest wall, lips pressing tightly and moving forcefully on Sho’s, spreading heat all over their bodies. As they broke away, panting and gasping for air, Sho wrapped his hands around Jun’s waist, abruptly pulling him closer, too sudden that their chests bumped and too close that their lips almost touched again.
“As expected from a model,” Sho chuckled, “Experienced with things like this, I suppose?”
Jun looked away at the feel of Sho’s breath, “Sho-san… Sorry I didn’t mean to… I…”
“You’re interesting, Matsumoto-kun, really interesting. I should have had accepted your feeling back then.”
Jun looked up at Sho, surprised. “What…?”
“I should have given you a chance.”
*
Before he knew it, Jun started to spend more time with Sho, whether it was Sho staying at Jun’s house or Jun staying at Sho’s apartment. From that day on, too, Jun started to know the reason why Sho suddenly wanted him. All the facts hurt, but they were just not enough to make Jun hate Sho, so he stayed.
“Nee, Jun, you know… Who was her name again? Rika-chan? I went to her place… She said I’m boring… Nee, what did you do to her at the photoshoot so she could lean so naturally on you?” Sho said as he hugged Jun from behind, breathing on Jun’s neck. “You’re much better than me… So tell me?”
Jun bit his lower lip at the mention of other girl’s presence, which was not the first time. “What am I to you?” Jun wanted to ask, but his mouth said otherwise, “You’re drunk, Sho,” as he smiled and turned to Sho, running his fingers through Sho’s hair and started kissing Sho’s lips.
But Sho hit him. Not that hard, but it still hurt. Sho strode to the bedroom while mumbling something. Jun sighed. The next hours, though, Sho woke Jun up too early in the morning, asking Jun to do a favor for him. So Jun did, no matter how bitter and cold it felt when it should have felt so sweet and warm.
Sho didn’t do it because he loved him. He did it because he was thinking of anyone else he couldn’t get, he knew it from the name he whispered sweetly while he was doing it with him, and it was obviously not Jun’s name. And it hurt.
“Rika-chan… I want you…”
*
“Eh, really!? I said that?” Jun smiled in surprise to what Aiba—his best friend for years—said about his childhood on their small reunion.
“Jun, this is your shortcake. You love shortcakes, right?” Sho walked towards their table and put the small plate on Jun’s table, smiling softly at him. Jun nodded and smiled, Aiba stared softly.
“Sho-chan is so kind…” Aiba whistled, Jun smiled bitterly.
They talked and reminisced all about their childhood. They were in the same school, although from different classes. But still, they talked to each other as if they were close friends.
“Nee, Jun-chan, come with me to the restroom!”
“Eh? Aiba-kun, don’t tell me you’re still afraid to go alone…?”
“Ssssh! Just come with me! Sho-chan, I’m borrowing him, okay!” Aiba said, dragging Jun along with him.
Aiba’s cheery expression changed as soon as they entered the restroom. “Sho-chan… really understands you well, ne, Jun-chan.”
“What do you mean?”
“See, how he chose your favorite food without even asking you, how he remembered all you said and did during your school years… He’s… really perfect, huh,” Aiba smiled.
“Thanks, but, Aiba-kun, sorry, I—”
“Jun-chan…” Aiba bit his lip. “Please make sure that you are truly happy, ne.”
“I’m… happy. What’s wrong?”
“Jun-chan, you know… Actually… I have a bad feeling about him… but… but it’s your choice so I won’t stop you… but if… IF things get tough… let me be your best friend then. You can tell me everything.”
“It’s a deal. Thanks, Aiba-kun.”
“Come anytime you need my help, ne?”
Jun patted Aiba’s shoulder as he left the restroom first. He sighed. Aiba might be right. Sho knew his favorite cake, not because they were lovers, but because he already told him just before they reached the café. Sho remembered all about his childhood not because he loved him, but because he was just so damn smart with large space for memories inside his head. Nothing special, and it hurt.
“So why do I keep on loving him?” Jun wondered. But for him, that time, no matter what Sho did, it was never enough to make him hate the cruel existence called Sakurai Sho.
*
And the day finally came when Sho really hurt him.
Sho was staying at Jun’s place that time. Jun woke up one morning with pain and marks on his body, grunting and calling, only to find Sho wasn’t there. He searched here and there, but he couldn’t find him. He couldn’t reach his phone. His apartment was empty, he knocked but no one answered. Since then he spent days without Sho, unwilling to go outside except to buy some instant foods at the konbini.
It was one night when he went home from the konbini to find a soft-pink envelope inside his mailbox. A wedding invitation. His eyes opened wide in shock. It was an invitation for Sho’s wedding. He read the names, and tears immediately welled up his eyes as he remembered the bride’s name as the name Sho often whispered and called in his sleeps, or between his moans. The name that wasn’t his name. It was “Rika”.
And it was what sent Jun to Aiba’s place, drenching wet and crying.
---
Jun found himself in the comfort of Aiba’s embrace after he finished telling everything to Aiba. Aiba sighed, taking a deep breath before finally smiled and asked Jun, “Ne, wipe your tears and come with me, Jun-chan.”
Jun wiped his tears away, and nodded after he felt he could walk straight and his eyes not blurry. Aiba took Jun in his arm, knowing Jun would surely stagger if he walked in such a weak condition. Slowly, Aiba led Jun to a small room with a sign hanging on the door: Aiba Masaki’s Treasure Room.
Jun knitted his eyebrows, “Treasure room? How lame,” Jun chuckled.
“S-shut up! This is where I keep my photographs, childhood memories, broken cameras, and things I used for my previous hobbies… like diving, camping… Come in. There, sit there,” Aiba turned on the lamp and pointed at a small white chair. “Well… let’s see…”
Jun took a look around the packed room, amazed at the neatly organized photos on the wall and how this guy managed to make so many stuffs fit into such a small room without making it look messy. Plushies, toy guns, cameras, lenses, diving suit, boxes…
And he heard a loud thud. Jun tilted his head as he saw Aiba brought out a big green box with silver ribbon from the cupboard, grinning proudly, “My real treasure.”
Aiba put the box on the floor, gesturing at Jun to sit on the floor, watching the contents of the treasure box.
Envelopes. So many envelopes. Jun took one and opened it, and he smiled.
“What is it?” Aiba asked.
“Your childhood photos. When you were a baby… and… this is you and your mother… this is… Ah, yes, Nino-chan? We used to play games with him, right? And this is… Ohno-san…?” Jun said as he flipped through the photos, reminiscing. Smile made its way slowly on Jun’s face seeing the images of the good old days. Aiba smiled from beside him, gazing admiringly at Jun’s soft smile.
“End? Open the other envelopes, too, Jun-chan,” Aiba offered a thick envelope which was slightly prettier than the others in the box.
Jun nodded and took the envelope from Aiba’s hand. As Jun opened the lid, Aiba stood up and walked to the window, opening it, mumbling randomly about the clear sky and the moon now that the rain had stopped.
Jun’s eyes widened. The first photo was him. His innocent face, smiling widely at the camera with a peace sign.
“Aiba-kun… You still have this picture!”
Aiba turned to Jun, but not moving an inch from the windowsill, “Yup. It was one summer, when we camped together. 12 years old back then.”
“Eeeh…” Jun turned his attention back at the pile of photos and started flipping again. Aiba leaned his back on the wall beside the window, staring at Jun’s back warmly.
“Gosh…” Jun muttered as he saw another picture of himself laughing happily with firework on his hands. “I didn’t remember this…”
“Around the same time, Jun-chan. I took the picture secretly. You looked so happy back then,” shivering a bit because of the cold wind, Aiba closed the window. “How I love your smile, Jun-chan!” he added, smiling warmly.
Jun smiled and blushed as he flipped again, and he found more pictures of him… actually all of them were Jun, smiling, laughing, happy. From their childhood until the last time they spent together. Jun couldn’t say a word, memories from his younger days were replaying inside his head.
---
“Oh God. Jun-chan… Sorry… I was just…”
Jun wiped his mouth, eyes staring at Aiba in shock. “You…”
“I’m sorry, Jun-chan!!!” Aiba grasped his hair in regret, tears started to form in his eyes.
“Aiba-kun, Aiba-kun, no… it’s okay. I don’t mind it. But I just… I can’t accept your feelings. Sorry.”
“Jun-chan…”
“Sorry. I know you really like me. But… You know, right, I have someone in mind…”
“Sho-chan from class 2-2… isn’t it?”
Jun nodded weakly, feeling slightly guilty for Aiba, “Sorry…”
“I… I’ll never be good enough for you, right? I’m stupid, I’m skinny, I get sick often, I…”
“Aiba-kun, stop it. You are… my best friend. You’re the best, believe me,” Jun said quickly, not realizing that it was the worst thing he said to Aiba.
Aiba smiled bitterly and sobbed, “Just… that, huh…?” he sighed, “I… I understand. Good luck with Sho-chan, okay? Sorry… for suddenly kissing you like that. Sorry… for being so disgusting, Jun-chan,” Aiba said and left.
---
“Sorry… for being so disgusting, Jun-chan,” Aiba said as he sat beside Jun on the floor, taking the pile of photos from Jun’s hand and put them back in the envelope. “I just can’t help it. I… Until now… I can’t stop this feeling for you…”
“Aiba-kun, I—”
“I’m really sorry!!!” Aiba bowed deeply to Jun, “I… I was a fool!!! I shouldn’t have showed you this when you are heartbroken… I’m the worst!!! I’m sorry… Jun-chan I’m sorry… for always being so disgusting…”
“Aiba-kun…”
Aiba sobbed and fished inside the box, and took out a small folding photo frame from the bottom of the box. Aiba took a deep breath before handing the frame to Jun.
“Jun-chan… I know… I’m disgusting. But please, at least… see this.” Aiba begged at Jun with his watery eyes.
Jun nodded awkwardly and took the frame in his hand. He opened the frame slowly to find his picture inside of it. It was Jun at Aiba’s farewell party, smiling brightly. Jun himself was surprised.
“This is… me? I can… smile like this…?”
Aiba smiled softly, “That’s why…” Aiba took the frame carefully, took the picture out and handed it back to Jun. Jun looked at Aiba, eyes full of question.
“Flip it,” Aiba instructed. “It was… my birthday wish…”
Jun flipped the picture and found Aiba’s neat handwriting at the back side. Jun’s heart raced as he read the letters and recalled the memories they had together.
---
“Jun-chan!!! Look!!! That cloud looks like an elephant!!”
“Stupid. It’s not an elephant!! Elephant doesn’t have horns, you know!!”
“Jun-chan is boring as always!!”
“And you are forever a stupid.”
“Koraaa!!!” Aiba chased after Jun but stumbled on a stone and fell head first. Jun ran back to help him stand and they laughed together.
*
“Jun-chan!!! Look!!! That mushroom looks like a pe—”
“SHUT UP, IDIOT!!! Lower your voice, we’re in public place!!!” Jun smacked Aiba’s head hard as he bowed to the people in the mushroom shop.
“Jun-chan……”
“What now!? A mushroom which looks like bre—”
“I’m bleeding…” Aiba rubbed his head, and showed him a small amount of blood on his fingertips.
“What?? How come??”
“Mooou… now who’s the idiot?? You smacked my head with that damn ring on!!!”
Jun looked at his hand, muttering a faint ‘oops’ as he laughed at Aiba’s expression.
*
“Jun-chaaan~”
“Whoa what the— Don’t enter my room without knocking first!!”
“See what I have heeere~” Aiba waved a porn DVD.
“Oh gosh, you… Get out of here will you… I need to stu—”
“Study? When your grades are already near perfect~?” Aiba waved the DVD once again, closer to Jun’s face this time.
“Yeah!”
“While your parents and sister are away~?”
“Uh… Yeah…”
“While I’m here to sleepover~?” Aiba swung the DVD slower and closer so Jun could see clearly and follow it with his eyes.
“You… well, yeah…”
“Ah, okay then, I’m going to watch it myself~” Aiba walked to the TV set and turned it on.
Lured by the sound from the TV, Jun had joined him before he knew it, grinning, drooling, and giggling like idiots in front of the TV screen.
*
“Jun-chan… how was it?”
“Aaah, my burden’s gone!! Well, I got rejected though, but it really went well!!! Hey, how about going to eat ramen after this? For celebration! My treat!”
“Jun-chan… Are you okay?” Aiba grabbed Jun’s shoulder, “What did he say to you? Tell me!”
Jun quickly looked away. “‘Sorry’, he said. He has someone else.”
“I know you’re lying, Jun-chan. We’ve been friends for years and this is how you behave when you a—”
“I’m not lying, Aiba-kun!! I’m—”
“Jun-chan.”
“He said I’m disgusting…”
Jun cried. Aiba stayed with Jun until he calmed down. They did go to eat ramen, though, and with Aiba’s accompaniment, Jun felt better quickly. Although not completely healed, but he was able to stay strong because of Aiba’s existence.
---
Jun lowered the picture slowly, looking up at Aiba, “Aiba… kun…” Jun couldn’t find better words to say.
“Lame, yes, I know. No, it’s disgusting, right? I’m sorry, Jun-chan. I’m sorry…” Aiba bowed again.
“Aiba-kun… Raise your head… Please…”
Aiba raised his head slowly, his face already wet with tears. “I’m sorry, Jun-chan… I love you… even now. Sorry for keeping quiet about this…” he wiped his tears with his sleeves.
“Sorry…” Jun whispered.
“Say, you’re tired, right…? Let’s… get out of here, okay?” Aiba stood up and offered his hand to Jun, who took it and leaned on it to stand up.
Jun patted Aiba’s shoulder. “Aiba-kun… I’m sorry… for not being able to return your feelings. But thanks for this. I’ll… I’ll treasure this… Well if you don’t mind…” Jun raised the picture awkwardly.
Aiba smiled and shook his head, “It’s okay, Jun-chan… Well… Now, shall we sleep? I have two futons in my room, my brother used to live here with me. Now that he’s not living here anymore, you can use it.”
Jun nodded. Aiba skipped to his bedroom to arrange the futon, and Jun followed. He stopped after a few steps, pondering over the memories he had with Aiba. Aiba was the one who said he loved him, and Aiba gave him happiness. Sho… Sho never said he loved him, and Sho never made him happy. It was all his selfishness.
Staring at Aiba’s figure from the bedroom door made Jun’s heart beat faster, so fast it was almost painful. Why didn’t I think about it earlier? If I were with him, I would never cried this much.
He recalled again, how Aiba used to call his name, how their closeness didn’t change at all even after Aiba confessed, how Aiba would cheer him up… How can I be so selfish, for not noticing how this man means so much for me?
“Jun-chan, help me with the pillows, will you?”
Jun’s gaze alternated between the picture in his hand and Aiba’s figure. How can I be so obsessed with Sho? Why didn’t I learn to love him back?
“Jun-chan, help me…” Aiba tugged Jun’s sleeve, dragging him inside, “There, the pillows. Take them down, okay, I’ll get extra covers from the other room,” Aiba instructed, but Jun didn’t pay a single attention.
“I’m sorry…” Jun mumbled as he grabbed Aiba’s elbow.
“Jun-chan?”
Jun pulled Aiba into a tight hug, dropping the picture in the process. Aiba gasped at the tightness, confused.
“I’m sorry… I’m sorry… I should have had noticed you… Aiba-kun, I’m sorry…”
“Jun-chan, what… What are you trying to say…?” Aiba’s lips formed a faint smile, half hoping for a chance.
Jun released his embrace and stared right into Aiba’s eyes, smiling nervously, “Let me… Let me learn how to love you back.”
Aiba blinked in surprise, “You… sure, Jun-chan?!”
Jun nodded. “Forgive me for being such a fool… However… I might need some time… to learn to love you. I still need… to recover.”
“Don’t worry, Jun-chan…” Aiba nodded, circling his arms around Jun’s neck to pull him closer.
Aiba’s lips already caught Jun’s before he knew it, and Jun felt warm and right. This was how a kiss should taste like. Warm, passionate, deep, trusting and loving. He didn’t care even if he died breathless because of the kisses. He didn’t care if his lips got swollen or bleed because of the intense contact. He didn’t care even if he got bald because of the grasping and pulling on his hair. He didn’t care if his bones were broken because of their fall and roll on the hard floor. Being kissed by Aiba and kissing him back just felt so… right.
They panted after they broke away. Jun couldn’t help but blush like crazy after the numbing kisses.
“Dammit. Where did all your ‘Sorry for being disgusting’ gone?” Jun rubbed his lips with his fingertips and said sarcastically.
Aiba giggled and patted Jun’s red cheeks, “Because now I have your approval, I’ll go head-on on you, Jun-chan. Just be prepared.”
“Whatever, Aiba-kun, whatever.”
“Ne, ne, you said you need some time, right?” Aiba nuzzled the tip of Jun’s nose.
“Yes.”
“Will it be long?”
“Maybe,” Jun answered, not wanting to admit that his heart was slowly but surely opening for Aiba as the hands of the clock ticked, “I’m sorry…”
“Don’t worry,” Aiba stared straight at Jun’s eyes, his eyes showing sincerity and hope at the same time, “I’ll make it faster,” he circled his hands around Jun’s waist.
Jun blushed again, “Why… err… thank you… I guess?”
Aiba giggled. They hugged each other, futons, pillows, picture, and extra covers forgotten. They just relied on each other’s warmth, welcoming a new beginning.
Dear God,
How many years has it been since I last saw his face?
How many birthdays have I spent, saying the same wish to meet him again?
Dear God,
It’s my 31th birthday today, and still I can’t meet him.
I don’t even know where he is.
Maybe You can’t grant my wish because You don’t want us to be together?
Or is it too selfish of me to want him here with me?
If so, then…
I just want this person to always smile.
I love his smile, I love it so much.
I don’t mind if I’m not made for him.
As long as I can see his genuine smile, I’m okay.
Please let him be happy, that would be my best birthday present.
God, please, bless Matsumoto Jun.
Aiba Masaki.
12242013
Jun smiled as he recited those words in his heart. Aiba-kun, your wish is granted. Jun pulled the already sleeping Aiba even closer.

a/n:
Got the idea after I listened to flumpool’s Boku no Sonzai. If I’m not mistaken, a friend told me that the song was a quite popular and well-liked song among flumpool fans (not sure about it, I’m not a really big fan of them, though >.<). It’s about unrequited love and it’s very melancholic, actually. I planned to write more angsty fic, as close as possible to the original lyrics, but… it turned out this way. I hope you like it. (;~;)
but 4000+ words!! ;A; my first long fic, thanks flumpool!! \(^O^)/ *gives cookies to Yamamura-san*
Ah, and my brain was in a bittersweet mess so... that cheesy banner was born.. =w=;
Beta-read by pimanzero, thank you for the song recommendation and thank you for beta-ing… and sorry for making your lovely Sho such a jerk, dear… ~(;w;)~
