-------
“Morning!” a cheerful voice greets me. Before I have the chance to look up to see the owner of that voice, a wide palm suddenly lands on my head, messing up my hair.
“Hey!” I protest, getting rid the hand off my head, and then smooth my hair back. The owner of the hand laughs happily, leaning to the table in front of me. It’s Sho-kun, one of my senior in this office.
“It’s Monday again, huh. I’m so happy I can go back to work,” he grins, showing off his chipmunk-like front teeth.
“Really? Unfortunately, I’m not. Especially because there is this certain someone who has tried to mess up with me since he entered the room.” I pout. Sho-kun laughs again. He knows that I’m just pretending to be angry. I never really be angry to him. How can I? He is my best friend in this company.
When I first came to this company two years ago, I was put in the design department. I haven’t had any work experiences before and I have no one to be asked, because everyone was very busy with their own works. I was so confused about what I should do to finish my first task given by the boss when I met him. Sakurai Sho. He was the one who patiently taught me about everything related to my job. That was the first time I met him.
As time goes by, we found out that we have many similarities. We like the same restaurants, we like the same movies, we adore the same actors or actresses, we listen to the same bands and singers, we read the same books, we enjoy the same TV shows, and many other similarities.
Before we know it, we’ve become close friend. We often go to have dinner together after work. Sometimes in our free times and holidays, we spend the day together going to the cinema , going to a book or music store, going to watch concerts, or just walking around the city, talking about random things that crossed our mind.
Being his friend is pretty fun. But then the time flows, and my feeling towards him grows. I get a crush on him. I was pretty sure that he has the same feeling towards me. Yeah, I was. Until last week, when I saw it. Then I’m not that sure anymore.
“Hey, don’t be so serious.” Sho-kun’s husky voice breaks my daydreaming. “Here, I bring something that I believe will cheer you up.” He sits down on the chair opposite to me, his right hand inside his bag, searching for something. At last he pulls out a light blue envelope, and stretches it towards me.
“What’s this?” I receive it, asking him with eyes full of questions. I’m about to open it, when he holds my hands, preventing me from tearing the envelope. My sight automatically drops at his hands. There, on his left ring finger. There’s a silver ring.
“No, no, no. Don’t open it yet. You can open it after I go back to my own table,” he says.
“So, what are you waiting for? Hurry up; go back to your table then. I’m so curious that I could die if I don’t see what’s inside the envelope now.” I wave my left hand, making a ‘get-lost-from-my-sight’ gesture towards Sho-kun. He pouts and makes a ‘buuuu’ shout, but then he obeys me to go back to his table at the far corner of the room, humming some random happy tones while stepping lightly.
I sit down and put down the envelope on my table, drowning in my thoughts again.
You know what it means right? A ring on the left ring finger: a wedding ring. He’s married. And he doesn’t tell me about it. Not at all. I don’t know why. I think I am his best friend. And the worst thing is: I love him.
This thought makes my heart aching. I think this is what people call broken heart.
I take a deep breath to calm down my thought before at last starting to tear the envelope. There’s a paper folds inside. I open it. Sho-kun’s handwriting on it. A letter.
Hi,
I’ve been watching you this whole week. You don’t look very well. What happened? You know you can always talk about anything to me.
By the way, I’ve found a good restaurant nearby. If you want to, I’ll treat you for a dinner there tomorrow. I hope this at least could boost up your mood a bit.
Tell me if you’ll go.
-Sho-
I fold the letter and place it back to the envelope. What a silly letter. How can I be alright, knowing that the man I love has already married? And he doesn’t even bother to tell me, his best friend, about that.
I look up and my sight meets Sho-kun’s. He looks anxious, observing me from his table. Seeing that kind of face, I can do nothing but throw a weak smile to him. “I’m okay.” My lips move without a sound towards him.
“Going?” he replies, moving his lips without a sound too. I shrug. He shrugs back.
Then we drown ourselves in our works.

I just put the last paper inside my drawer, when Sho-kun arrives at my table.
“You will go, won’t you? Tomorrow?” he asks.
“Mm… I don’t know…”
“Come on, I’m sure you’re gonna love their dishes.”
“But…” I hesitate, “… your wife. Won’t she be angry if you go out for a dinner with other girl?”
“My what?” he looks confused.
“Your wife,” I repeat. “That ring. I’ve seen it.”
He follows my sight to his left fingers. “Oh, this… Well … don’t worry about her. She won’t be angry. She’ll be there with us too.”
“But…”
“Oh come on,” he insists. “Don’t you want to meet the girl I love?”
I stare at him for a few seconds, before at last surrender. “Okay. I’ll go.”
“Great! Then, I’ll pick you up at seven, okay? See you then.”
He goes home happily, leaving me alone, drowning in my own thoughts again.

“Here it is.” Sho-kun stops in front of a small restaurant at the corner of the street near my company building. There are two huge trees in front of the restaurant which block its board sign from the sight of the people who walks on the street. That’s why I don’t notice it before.
“The lasagna here is the most delicious that I’ve ever eaten. You love lasagna, don’t you? That’s why I invite you here,” he chirps cheerfully, opening the front door for me.
Inside the restaurant, the atmosphere is so romantic. The lightning is dim. There are candle lights on every table. Small lamps hanging from the ceiling, looks like stars on the night sky.
Sho-kun leads the way to the table near the window, where we can see the restaurant’s garden. We sit and order some foods and drinks.
Somehow it feels strange. I remember yesterday Sho-kun told me that his wife will go with us. But now I see no one else with him. Looks like my thought appears on my face, that Sho-kun notice it.
“Is there something wrong?” he asks.
“Mm…” I bit my lower lip. “Where is your wife? Isn’t she supposed to go with us?”
Sho-kun laughs. The laughter that I love. “Don’t worry about her. You’ll see her soon. For now, let’s just enjoy the foods.” He grins meaningfully.
When the foods and drinks come out, I’ve already forgotten about my worries. Sho-kun’s right. The lasagna tastes very good. We eat and have a chat just like we always do.
When the dessert comes out, Sho-kun’s face suddenly turns serious.
“I have an important thing to tell you,” he begins.
Here it comes. Finally he will tell me about his marriage. And maybe he will introduce me to his wife as well. My heart starts aching again. I stare at him, abandon my chocolate truffle pudding.
“But before that, I have several questions. I need you to answer all of my questions honestly, do you agree?” His face is so serious, that I can’t do nothing but nod. “First, it’s about my ring. How long have you noticed it?”
“Um, well, a week I think. I firstly saw you wear that ring on Monday last week.”
“I see. Then, the next question,” he continues carefully, “Was it this ring that has brought your mood down this entire week?”
I am surprised by his question. My eyes widen, my mouth open, but I can’t say a word.
“Yes, or no?” he asks again.
“Sho-kun, I…”
“You’ve agreed to answer all of my questions honestly,” he insists.
I hesitate for a moment, before at last answer him weakly, “Yes…” I feel my blood pumped up to my cheeks, that it feels a little hot all of a sudden.
Sho-kun smiles.
“Then, the last question,” he can’t hide his grins, “Do you love me?”
I feel a thousand volts of electricity suddenly strike my head.
“What?”
His grin wider, “Do you love me?” he repeats.
“Sho-kun… I… I can’t answer this question, really.” I say, panicked.
Sho-kun’s eyes still stick on me. There’s a naughty bolt on it. He is enjoying my reaction!
“Okay,” he says, “Then maybe this could help you to answer my question.” He reaches inside his jean’s pocket, and pulls out something. Something round and sparkling.
A ring. A silver ring. A silver ring that matches his.
“What is the meaning of this?” I really am confused.
Suddenly Sho-kun takes my left hand that lies on the table beside the pudding plate. He puts the ring on my left ring finger. The ring fits my finger well.
I’m too shocked to utter a word or to give any response.
“Let me explain this from the beginning,” Sho-kun puts my left hand back to the table, but he doesn’t let go his grip. It makes me so nervous, that I believe my face now has turned as red as tomatoes. I keep looking down, staring our hands connected.
“I’m falling in love with you. But I don’t have any courage to confess my feeling to you. I’m afraid that if you don’t have the same feeling, our friendship will be over. I don’t want it to happen. That’s why I set up this plan. I wear this ring for a purpose. It’s to test your feeling towards me… And after watching your mood dropping this whole week since I wear this ring… I finally take a conclusion, that you have the same feeling towards me…” he pauses. I feel Sho-kun’s hands shaken a little. Maybe he is nervous too. “Please, tell me I’m not wrong,”
At last I manage to raise my head to look at him. And I get surprised, that Sho-kun’s face has turned all red too. He releases his grip on my left hand and stared at his pudding.
“If…” he continues, his voice sounds hoarse, “If It turns out that I was wrong, and you don’t have the same feeling with me, you can take the ring off your finger… But… But if you have the same feeling with me, then you can keep the ring…”
“I… uhm…” I hear myself say. Suddenly a mischievous idea crosses my mind. I smile devilishly. It’s time for revenge. Ha-ha.
“Um… Sho-kun, I’m sorry,” I pull my hands off the table, holding the ring on my left ring finger with my right hand, as if to take it off. Sho-kun stares at me desperately. His expression is so original, that I can’t hold it any longer. I laugh.
He’s surprised and he stares at me with eyes full of questions.
“I’m sorry,” I continue after I can control myself, “I think I’ll keep this ring. It fits my finger well. What a waste to give it back to you.” I look at him, grinning.
“YOU... !” Sho-kun yells.
And before I know it, he has already jumped from his seat, leaning forward on the table, bowing down towards me. His lips on mine.
The silver rings on our finger sparkle in the candle lights.
